The Chieftains hanno iniziato il loro viaggio di ambasciatori della cultura irlandese nel 1962. Il fondatore e leader Paddy Moloney (Uilleann pipe, tin whistle), Matt Molloy (flauto) e Kevin Conneff (bodhrán, voce), hanno reso popolare la musica tradizionale irlandese in tutto il mondo nel corso della loro sorprendente carriera che, in 60 anni di attività, ha ottenuto sei Grammy Awards e un Academy Award. La loro capacità di varcare i confini musicali fondendo la tradizione con la contemporaneità li ha portati ed essere uno dei gruppi musicali più rinomati e venerati del panorama internazionale.
Le loro esibizioni sono state legate a grandi eventi storici: sono stati i primi musicisti occidentali ad esibirsi sulla Grande Muraglia Cinese, il primo ensemble ad eseguire un concerto al Campidoglio di Washington, DC, e nel 2010 le loro collaborazioni hanno varcato i confini terrestri quando il twistle di Paddy Moloney e il flauto di Matt Molloy hanno viaggiato con l’astronauta della NASA, Cady Coleman, alla stazione spaziale internazionale, rendendoli la prima band a duettare con un astronauta della NASA sulla ISS. The Chieftains non hanno mai temuto di scioccare i puristi e travalicare i confini del genere perché sono sempre stati fortemente legati alle loro radici tanto che oggi sono a loro agio nell’improvvisare “sessions” irlandesi che nell’esibisti sul palco dalla Carnegie Hall. Dopo sei decenni di grandi successi, la loro musica rimane fresca e vitale come nelle prime esibizioni rivolte ad un pubblico puramente folk. Il loro viaggio continua…
